In the early 1990s, the title character Astha has a typical life in a typical house, complete with a chauvinist husband Hemant, obnoxious in-laws, needy kids, faulty pressure cookers, and continual prodding to be grateful because "all her needs are taken care of."

Her only source of independence is the institution where she teaches. She has an awakening and a sense of freedom when Muslim political activist Aijaz enters her tidy and segregated existence, and she takes it to be love.

However, Aijaz ends up becoming the show's lone political victim, which allows Peeplika, his witty pansexual widow, to replace him in Astha's affections. What follows is a show that showcases the needs and wants of women apart from their typical household needs and also a tale of 2 women finding love in each other without making a big deal out of it.
