Tollywood is a part of Indian cinema devoted to the creation of films in the Telugu language, which is mainly used in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Hyderabad, India's Film Nagar neighborhood is home to Telugu cinema.

The only South Indian film shown at the inaugural India International Film Festival was Pathala Bhairavi (1951). With the creation and release of Bhishma Pratigna in 1921, the Telugu film industry began with silent films.

Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Prabhas, Ram Charan, Nagarjuna, Vijay Devarakonda, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Anushka Shetty, Pooja Hegde, Dhanya Balakrishna, Krishi Thapanda, Vidyu Raman, Shanvi Srivastava, etc. are some of the most popular actors in Tollywood. 

H.M. Reddy, who also directed the first bilingual talkie Kalidas (in Telugu and Tamil), produced Bhakta Prahlada, the first Telugu movie with audible dialogue. One of India's top three film producers is the Telugu film industry. In 2006, 245 Telugu films were made, which was a record for India.

In India, there is a decent amount of diversity in the film industries. In contrast to the past, when Telugu filmmakers took their inspiration from Bengali literature and cinema, many popular Telugu films have been heavily reproduced by the Bengali and Hindi film industries after 2005.

The Nandi Awards are the most well-known government-sponsored celebration for recognising achievement in Telugu film, theatre, and television production. The Film, Television and Theatre Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh previously performed it annually at Lalitha Kala Thoranam in Hyderabad.
