Trishna is an English-language movie and a joint British-Swedish-Indian adaptation of ‘Tess of the d'Urbervilles’ by Thomas Hardy, published in 1891. After Jude and The Claim, it is Winterbottom's third Hardy adaption.

Trishna, which is based on Thomas Hardy's classic book Tess of the D'Urbervilles, depicts the tale of a lady whose life is ruined by the constraints of social rank, the difficulties of love and life, and her personal growth. Trishna encounters Jay Singh, a successful British businessman who has relocated to India to work in his father's hotel operation, in modern-day Rajasthan. 

He is drawn to her beauty and purity when he sees her dancing in a hotel. Trishna accepts Jay's offer of a job when an accident wrecks her father's Jeep and leaves her family without the means to support themselves. She starts working under Jay. The film shows Trishna's entire life ahead of her.
