Rajesh Mapuskar wrote and directed the 2016 Marathi-language comedic drama film Ventilator, which was also produced by Priyanka Chopra. A cast of over 100 artists, including Ashutosh Gowariker, Jitendra Joshi, Sulbha Arya, Swati Chitnis, and Sukanya Kulkarni, are featured in the movie. Some days prior to the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, the eldest and most cherished member of the Kamerkar family enters a coma and is placed on a ventilator.
The Kamerkar family gathers each year in their ancestral village to commemorate Ganesh Chaturthi. Three days before the festival, Gajanan Karmerkar, also known as Gajju Kaka, a beloved and admired family patriarch, falls into a coma. In a hospital in Mumbai, he is given medical ventilation as life support. During a showing of his movie with Priyanka Chopra, Gajanan's nephew Raja Kamerkar, a well-known Bollywood film director, learns this information from his father, who advises Raja to head to the hospital. Raja, who is facing problems with his own father, has received a lot of kindness from Gajju Kaka. Raja informs everyone, along with the relatives in the village, as he travels to the hospital. While worrying about Gajju Kaka, his relatives are also anxious about the approaching celebrations. A time of sadness would result from Gajju Kaka's passing during the festival, ruining their festive plans.
Gajju Kaka's entire family as well as his neighbours pay a visit to him in the hospital and offer Lord Ganesha prayers for a speedy recovery. While some people are pleased about Raja's impending film and his success, others are happy to see Raja at the hospital with Gajanan's wife Manda and their baby Prasanna. Everyone in the ICU is present when Raja enters, but most of them are preoccupied with matters unrelated to Gajju Kaka's health. Raja finds it amusing how the family members are reacting differently to the pandemonium around them. Prasanna is active in politics and has ambitions to win a tournament to impress his boss even during this challenging period. Meanwhile, Pritam, the village cousin of Prassana and Raja, is travelling with his uncle and family.
Everyone in the family is aware that Prasanna and his father Gajanan have a problematic relationship. On the other hand, Sarika, Prasanna's sister, has a close bond with their father. Prasanna should have been there for Gajanan since, as Manda points out, he has always loved him. The employer of Prasanna fires him and replaces him with his helper. When the village family shows up, they are stunned to find that he would always be dependent on the ventilator. The family accepts Prasanna's decision to keep Gajanan on the ventilator until the following afternoon. Raja, who had issues with his own father, requests that Prasanna visit Gajanan's ward and say goodbye to him. Prasanna expresses his frustration with his father, saying that he was unable to emulate "his favourite Raja" and that Gajanan had always given preference to his sister Sarika.
Lata, a cousin of Raja and Prasanna, and her husband and little boy fly in the following day from the United States. The youngster displays his family tree, which he has drawn, to them all. He inquires about Prasanna's father, and Prasanna replies that his father didn't care about him. Following their overhearing, Raja's father and Gajanan's brother remind Prasanna of his father's struggles following the birth of his narrow nostril and, in contrast to what Prasanna had previously believed, how much Gajanan loved him. As a result, Prassana changes his mind and dashes to the ward to make up with Gajanan while also pleading with the medical staff to keep his father on the ventilator. His mother, sister, and he reunite and give each other hugs. This gives Raja confidence as he works to forget his disagreement with his own dad. Gajanan smiles while still using the ventilator.
Ventilator was released on 4 November 2016 and was a massive hit at the box office. Made on a budget of 3.5 crores, the movie went on to earn close to 25 crores, making it the 10th highest-grossing Marathi movie of all time in the year 2017. The movie was loved by critics and audiences alike and went on to win three awards at the National Film Awards including Best Director, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Owing to its popularity, the movie was remade in Gujarati with the same title in the year 2018.
