The protagonist of the tale is a young girl named Pooja from a traditional Gujarati middle-class family in Mumbai. Pooja admires Karan Johar and aspires to be a successful film director.

Pooja hides her enrollment in a sought-after film studies program at the posh St. Martin's College from her father in order to fulfill her goal. Pooja is immediately confronted by the trendy and upper-class students of St. Martin's at the college and is made acutely conscious of her middle-class appearance and demeanor. 

The wealthy English-speaking pupils mistreat her and refer to her as "vernacular" since she has a Gujarati accent and voice. The narrative centers on her undergraduate career as she progressively gains the respect of her peers socializes more and successfully completed her studies.
