Mohabbatein is a tale of romance, music, and customs that is set in the illustrious all-boys boarding school Gurukul. Narayan Shankar, the principal of the school, is a rigorous enforcer of rules who passionately believes in tradition and discipline (Amitabh Bachchan). Megha (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), the daughter of Narayan Shankar, who is engaged to another man, captures his heart. Megha's father objects to Raj and Raj's covert meetings, but they go on.

Vicky, Sameer, and Karan, three of Narayan Shankar's students, fell in love with three girls from a nearby girls' school at the same time. When Narayan Shankar learns of their connections, he kicks them out of the school. Raj and his pupils make the decision to defy Narayan Shankar's rigid guidelines and implore him to believe in the efficacy of love.

Narayan Shankar eventually acknowledges his mistakes and accepts the power of love in the movie's climax. He invites the expelled students back and permits his daughter to wed the man she adores. The movie concludes with the inspiring message that love triumphs over all, despite stern opposition and conventional social mores.

The 1989 American coming-of-age thriller Dead Poets Society is said to have served as the movie's inspiration, according to the Encyclopaedia of Hindi Cinema.
