Career
He first gained fame for his unique fusion of Carnatic, Hindustani, and Jazz music in his non-film album Breathless which became a hit in 1998. Besides his successful solo career, he is part of the famous music trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, which has composed numerous popular scores for the Indian film industry.
In his career as a composer, Shankar Mahadevan has worked on a variety of films across languages, from Hindi to Tamil and Telugu. Some of his notable works include Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Don: The Chase Begins Again.
His talents are not limited to music alone. Mahadevan has shown his acting skills as well, with cameos in various films like Aranmanai 3 and Rhythm. He also acted in a Doordarshan serial Ek Se Badh Kar Ek in 1995. Shankar Mahadevan made his Marathi film debut in the 2015 film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, where he played the role of Pandit Bhanu Shankar Shastri, a classical singer. He also sang and composed music for the movie, with his songs adding a rich layer to the film's appeal. For his outstanding contribution, Shankar Mahadevan won the Best Playback Singer – Male award at the Filmfare Awards Marathi for the song Sur Niragas Ho.

In 2000, he earned the National Film Award for his song Yenna Solla Pogirai from Kandukondain Kandukondain. In 2007, he was awarded the Swaralaya-Kairali-Yesudas Award and another National Film Award for the song Maa from Taare Zameen Par.
In 2008, his song Kalyana Kacheri from Madampi won the Kerala State Film Award. The following year, his song Pichavecha Naal from Puthiya Mukham won the Asianet Film Award and the Annual Malayalam Movie Award in Dubai.
The government of Andhra Pradesh honoured him with the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2011. That same year, his song Indhumukhi Varumo won the Kerala Film Critics Award. The MAA Music Award was awarded to him in 2012 for Nee Dookudu, and in 2015, the Tulu Cinemotsava awarded him Best Playback Singer for Rikshaw Driver. Lastly, in 2019, Shankar received the Padma Shri from President Ram Nath Kovind for his contributions to film music.
