Sanju is a 2018 Indian biographical film in the Hindi language that was written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra collaborated to produce it under the respective production companies Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vinod Chopra Films. The movie chronicles the life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, including his substance abuse, his arrest for his alleged role in the 1993 Bombay bombings, his connection with his father, his comeback in the business, the eventual dismissal of the Bombay bombing charges, and his eventual release after serving his jail sentence. Along with Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, Ashnoor Kaur, Anushka Sharma, Aditi Gautam, Dia Mirza, Ashwin Mushran, and Jim Sarbh, Ranbir Kapoor plays the lead role.

Sanjay "Sanju" Dutt is the subject of a biography by lyricist D. N. Tripathi, who compares him to Mahatma Gandhi. He is ejected by Sanjay, who is shocked. In its decision on the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Supreme Court of India condemns Sanjay to five years in prison for violating the Arms Act of 1959. His wife Manyata Dutt asks London-based writer Winnie Diaz to pen his biography and share his version of events with the public while they are still together in their home with their two twin daughters.

The request to not publish the book is made to Winnie by property developer Zubin Mistry, which intrigues her at first. She learns that he is also a womaniser and has had over 200 affairs, but Sanjay giggles and tells the truth. His life is initially portrayed in a flashback as the tale shifts to the past after Winnie interviews him.

Rocky will serve as the foundation for Sunil Dutt's Bollywood debut (1981). Sanjay's then-friend Zubin "God" pushes him to use drugs for the first time after becoming upset with Sunil's domineering behaviour on set. Soon after learning that his mother Nargis has pancreatic cancer, Sanjay and his family travel to New York for medical attention. His deterioration into drunkenness and drug addiction is accelerated by this experience.

In New York, Sanjay meets Kamli, an admirer of Nargis, and they quickly become friends. He assists Sanjay in abstaining from drug use. Sanjay relapses after finding out that his lover Ruby's marriage was fixed as a result of his drug abuse. Ruby comes to the registrar's office after understanding her love for Sanjay and is persuaded by Kamlesh to file to marry Sanjay.

When she gets to Sanjay's residence, she finds that he isn't there and learns that he is still abusing narcotics, so she decides to leave. Sanjay experiences severe distress when Nargis passes away three days before Rocky is released. As a result, he decides to enrol in a rehabilitation facility in the United States, where he recovers with the aid of Sunil and Kamlesh. When he gets back to India, he runs into Zubin and beats him up for selling him narcotics after discovering that Zubin was taking glucose.

Back in the present, the now-estranged Kamlesh, who is now a billionaire and is found by Winnie in New York, tells the story of Sanjay's later years. He initially hesitates to give her the tale because he has wasted a lot of time on Sanjay, but he eventually agrees. When Sanjay starts bodybuilding in the 1990s, his career in Bollywood significantly advances. By hooking up with his Gujarati lover Pinky, he defrauds Kamlesh, but the situation is later resolved when Kamlesh learns that Pinky only loved him for his fortune.

Following the 1992 destruction of the Babri Masjid, Sanjay purchases three AK-56 guns to safeguard the safety of Sunil (who by this time had entered politics) and sister Priya Dutt. Bombay then has a slew of blasts shortly after. Sanjay is detained in 1993 for having illicit weapons that the D-Company allegedly intended to trade for use in riot prevention following the bombings.

The TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) finds him guilty and sentences him to five years in prison, endangering his career. The media calls him a terrorist, further damaging his reputation. Kamlesh breaks off contact with Sanjay since he thinks he's guilty. Sanjay has starred in a lot of dud movies since its 1995 debut. When his star started to fade, Sunil, who plays his father in the movie, forced him to accept the lead part in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003).

It enhances Sanjay's reputation and earns him the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role, making Sunil happy. Sunil passes away shortly after that. Sanjay is found guilty of violating the Possession of Arms Act in 2006 by the Bombay High Court, which does not judge him to be a terrorist. The identical verdict sustained by the Indian Supreme Court results in his detention once more in 2013. Winnie and Kamli are persuaded of Sanjay's innocence by his claim that he was wrongly accused of terrorism by the media.

After being granted bail in 2016, he learns that Winnie has finished writing his biography, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, which is named after one of Sunil's favourite Amar Prem songs (1972). He leaves the facility and meets up with Kamlesh and Manyata again. Sanjay advises his children to emulate Sunil rather than to emulate him. Although he struggled, Sunil helped him become a famous performer.

Sanju was a blockbuster hit at the box office, earning close to 500 crores and becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2018. It was praised for its direction and storytelling which also earned it the Best Film Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
