Introduction 

Jersey is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language sports drama film written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. It is a remake of his 2019 Telugu film of the same name. Rob Miller of Reel Sports coordinated and supervised the cricket action. Along with Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor, it stars Shahid Kapoor as a former cricket player who returns to the sport to fulfil his son's desire to purchase a Jersey T-shirt.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jersey's cinema release date was initially set for August 28, 2020, however, it was repeatedly delayed. On April 22, 2022, the movie was released in theatres. Jersey did poorly at the box office despite receiving favourable reviews from critics and appreciation for Shahid Kapoor's performance.

Story 

PlayJersey is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language sports drama film directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. The movie follows the story of a talented but failed cricketer named Arjun (played by Shahid Kapoor) who decides to make a comeback in his late thirties. He returns to the field with a desire to fulfil his dream of playing for the Indian cricket team and winning his lost respect.

Arjun's comeback is met with scepticism and ridicule from those around him, including his friends and family, who believe he is too old and past his prime. Nevertheless, Arjun refuses to let these opinions get in his way and begins to train in secret, pushing himself to the limits. He eventually impresses the selectors and earns a place on the state cricket team, where he starts to make a name for himself.

As Arjun continues to impress on the field, he faces new challenges, including injuries and competition from younger players. However, with the support of his wife, friends, and mentor, he manages to overcome these obstacles and eventually earns a place on the Indian cricket team.

Throughout the film, Jersey highlights the importance of perseverance and the power of determination. Arjun's journey serves as an inspiration to audiences, reminding them that it is never too late to chase their dreams. 

Release Date

Jersey was proclaimed on April 22, 2022. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic delaying production, the movie was previously slated for cinema release on 28 August 2020 and subsequently on 5 November 2021. Later, it was once more decided that it would be released in theatres on December 31, 2021, however, this was postponed indefinitely because of the Omicron variant spread. Later, the release date was pushed back a week to April 14, 2022, in order to avoid a conflict with Beast and K.G.F: Chapter 2. The movie debuted on Netflix on May 20, 2022. Balaji Motion Pictures, Pen Marudhar Entertainment, and Yash Raj Films all handle domestic distribution, while Phars Film Co. and Yash Raj Films handle international sales.

Reviews

PlayAmar Ujala's Pankaj Shukla gave the movie a score of 4/5. A Prabhat Khabar reviewer gave the movie a 3.5/5 grade. This film focuses more on emotional drama, although it could have found a tighter balance between the sports and the human drama, wrote Archika Khurana of The Times Of India in her review, which she awarded the movie a rating of 3.5/5. Jersey is a well-intentioned athletic drama that, like the original, has heart in the appropriate places, according to Pinkvilla's Himesh Mankad, who awarded the movie 3.5/5. It depends on Shahid Kapoor's outstanding performance as the cricket player who rises to shout and rebellion. 

This Bollywood film is a pure heart after the deluge of south Indian masala films. However, Gowtam Tinnanuri, who previously directed the same movie in Telugu, makes this also a South Indian production.

Shahid Kapoor plays Arjun Talwar in the movie this time. After Kabir Singh's enormous success, we anticipate a class act from him. Likewise, he delivers it. Additionally, Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor make up an outstanding supporting cast.

In the movie Jersey, a cricketer initially retires from the sport but, at the age of 36, chooses to take up cricket again in order to fulfil his son's desire and ultimately demonstrate his talent. Shahid, however, is also an outsider in Bollywood. This movie has a lot of depth. A multiplex movie eventually comes along that both parents and kids may enjoy. In the present day, it is the ideal family package. This movie has a great look and feel thanks to the eye-catching cinematography of Anil Mehta and the heartfelt music of Sachet-Parampara. Songs are excellent. Bravo to Shelly the lyricist and the music team. Each song is complex.

Gowtam Tinnanuri is the writer and director of the 2022 Indian sports drama Jersey, which is in Hindi. It is a remake of his 2019 Telugu film of the same name. Rob Miller of ReelSports coordinated and directed the cricket action. Geetha Arts, Dil Raju Production, Sithara Entertainments, and Brat Films are the producers of the movie. 

Sachet-Parampara composed the songs for the movie, and Shellee wrote the lyrics. Anirudh Ravichander, who created the soundtrack and score for the original Telugu version, composed the music for the movie. Javed Ali sings Jind Meriye in the movie version. Parampara Tandon performed the second version of Maiyya Mainu.

Character Analysis

Shahid Kapoor as Arjun Talwar

Arjun is the protagonist of the film and the driving force behind the story. A failed cricketer in his thirties, Arjun decides to make a comeback and fulfill his dream of playing for the Indian cricket team. Despite facing numerous challenges, including age and health, Arjun refuses to give up and trains hard to prove himself. Nani gives a convincing and emotional performance as Arjun, capturing the character's determination, passion, and vulnerability.

Mrunal Thakur as Vidya Rao Talwar

Vidya is Arjun's wife and a supportive partner who stands by him throughout his journey. She provides emotional support and encouragement and helps Arjun stay focused on his goals.

Pankaj Kapur as Baali

Baali is Arjun's mentor and the coach of the state cricket team. He recognizes Arjun's potential and provides guidance and support throughout his journey.

Ronit Kamra as Young Ketan Talwar

Arjun's son Ketan is a significant character in the film Jersey. He serves as a source of inspiration for Arjun and drives him to pursue his dreams. Arjun is motivated by the desire to provide his son with a better life and make him proud. PlaySoon after the Telugu film Jersey (2019) was released, rumours of a remake started to circulate. Later, it was revealed that Shraddha Kapoor was being considered for the role of the female lead while Shahid Kapoor had already been cast as the lead actor. Rashmika Mandanna, a Kannada actress, was under consideration to portray the female protagonist in this Hindi debut film in August 2019. On October 14 of same year, a formal announcement was made announcing the whole cast and crew. 

However, Mrunal Thakur's casting in the film was later decided upon, and Pankaj Kapur, Shahid's father, was chosen to play Coach Murthy. In Chandigarh, the main photography started on December 14, 2019.

Shahid Kapoor reportedly required thirteen stitches during a scene while filming in January 2020, but he eventually made a full recovery. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a stop to production in March 2020. Filming at the all-boys boarding school, The Doon School, and Kasiga School resumed in October 2020 after the production moved to Dehradun. The cricket fields, buildings, and pavilion at Doon are depicted in the movie and the trailer. Strict bio bubbles and quarantine regulations were in place for the actors and crew's protection during the film's final schedule, which took place in the Mohali Stadium in Punjab. The last day of filming was December 14, 2020.

Box Office Collection

On its first day, Jersey brought in 3.75 crores at the domestic box office. The movie brought in 5.50 crore on day two. The movie brought in 5.50 crore on the third day, bringing the domestic weekend total to 14.75 crore.

The movie made 22.65 crore in India and 4.47 crore elsewhere as of May 7th, 2022, for a total worldwide gross of 27.12crorese.

Jersey received favourable reviews from critics but did poorly at the box office. The film's failure was attributed by Ganesh Aaglave of Firstpost to the competition from K.G.F: Chapter 2, Shahid Kapoor's excess of remakes of South Indian movies, the free availability of the Hindi dub of the original movie on YouTube, and the film's lacklustre music in comparison to his previous work.
