Mimi - 2021

Introduction

Mimi is a comedy-drama movie that was made in 2021 by Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Utekar's Maddock Films. Mala Aai Vhhaychy!, a 2011 Marathi movie that was remade, stars Kriti Sanon  as the title character who decides to become a surrogate mother for an international marriage. In supporting roles are Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak, Evelyn Edwards, and Aidan Whytock.

Filming for Mimi began in October 2019 after being announced in August 2019. It was shot in Mumbai and Rajasthan. A. R. Rahman  wrote the music for the movie and the soundtrack, and Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the lyrics. Akash Agarwal handled the cinematography, and Manish Pradhan edited Utekar's 2019 film Luka Chuppi, which also starred Sanon.

Details

Story

American couple John and Summer are unable to conceive. In pursuit of a surrogate mother, they travel to Rajasthan. They believe Mimi Rathod, a local dancer and aspiring actress, would make the ideal surrogate mother for them after meeting her. With a promise of 20 lakh (US$25,000), they persuade local taxi driver Bhanu Pratap Pandey to hire Mimi as their surrogate. Mimi, who desires to be a Bollywood star and travels to Mumbai, eventually agrees after some initial hesitation because she lacks the financial resources necessary to pursue her aspirations.

The IVF process is successful, and Mimi conceives John and Summer's kid. Mimi tells her parents she is travelling to Mumbai for a film shoot for nine months to conceal the pregnancy from them. She moves in with Shama, a friend. John and Summer ask Bhanu to look after Mimi while she is pregnant.

7 Months Later

John and Summer are devastated to learn that Mimi's newborn child has down syndrome during a routine check-up. They quickly depart for the USA, claiming they no longer desire the child and advising Mimi to have an abortion. Disappointed, Mimi chooses against aborting the child and opts to carry the pregnancy to term. Now that she is clearly pregnant, Mimi returns to her house and, when asked who the child's father is, says that he is Bhanu. This causes more issues because Bhanu's wife resides in Delhi and hasn't seen him in months.

When Mimi gives birth to Raj, a healthy boy, it is revealed that the earlier test result was incorrect. Raj's fair skin, which differs from that of his presumed biological parents, also causes people to be curious and perplexed, turning him into a beloved local wonder. There is uncertainty and commotion in Rajasthan when Bhanu's family arrives. Eventually, Mimi tells her family the truth about the surrogacy, and they embrace the child. She falls completely in love with Raj and gives up her dreams of becoming a Bollywood star to take care of him.

4 Years Later

Raj grew up being loved by Mimi's parents and receiving attention and occasionally ridicule from his schoolmates due to his "odd" appearance. Following the viewing of a video of Mimi and Raj on Facebook, John and Summer return to India. They claim to have changed their minds and now want to bring Raj back to the United States. Raj is now Mimi's child, she claims, and she won't give him back to Summer.

However, John threatens legal action because Raj is not Mimi's legal child as long as she is compensated for her services, despite Mimi's signing a surrogacy contract. Mimi rejects this idea and chooses to return Raj to John and Summer since she doesn't want Raj to go through the struggle of court cases. Bhanu and Mimi's parents are getting ready to fight it out in court.

When Mimi, Bhanu, and her family visit John and Summer on the day of their trip back to America to send Raj off, they are shocked to see John holding Tara, a toddler whom Summer claims to be their daughter. It is revealed that on their way back from Mimi's house, they passed by an orphanage. Upon seeing Tara wailing from behind the orphan gate, they connected with her and decided to adopt her. After watching Mimi and Raj, Summer describes how parenthood had nothing to do with blood and everything to do with love and care. As they realise Raj is Mimi's son and should stay with her, they leave him with her and her family.

Reviews

The well-written, well-made movie "Mimi" has heart. The protagonist of the story is the surrogate mother, who struggles after her biological parents decide against the surrogacy.

Although Kriti Sanon has a large number of films to her credit that showcase her elegance, she reveals she is much more than just a lovely face. She might finally start to be adored as an actress rather than a model.

As always, Pankaj Tripathi excels as a character who initially drives the action and later provides humour and joy when things get tough. Instead of playing the stereotypical "English couple in an Indian movie," Evelyn and Aiden emotionally invested themselves as the characters who want a child. Evelyn did a fantastic job, especially in the movie's second half.

Even as supporting actors, Manoj, Suprathi, and Sai were remarkable. The background score and the music score by A. R. Rahman flow flawlessly throughout the movie, adding an extra cherry on top. Overall, it's a lovely movie that you should see.

Character Analysis

Kriti Sanon as Mimi Rathore

She is tall, a graceful dancer, and what she calls a "threat" to all the Bollywood stars she fantasises about ousting when and if her lady luck shines. A photoshoot with Dabbo Ratnani costs five lakh rupees, and her "viral dance video" with T-Series costs eight to ten lakh rupees, according to her Mumbai contact, who spares no effort to make the feisty belle aware that her filmic goals are not inexpensive. The vibrant and attractive indigenous dancer who resides in Rajasthan. She lives in a modest household with her parents, grandmother, and music teacher father. She aspires to move to Mumbai and pursue her ambition of becoming a Bollywood star. Her bedroom walls are covered in posters of Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh.

Pankaj Tripathi as Bhanu Pratap Pandey

During their journey to India, a white American couple is given the task of being chauffeured about by Bhanupratap Pandey, played by Pankaj Tripathi. Bhanu Pratap is mimi’s father shown in the movie. There are some genuinely funny moments (especially when Tripathi is acting as Bhanu) and some introspective scenes and dialogue. The movie fluctuates between being airy and light and serious and unsettling. It is a feat for the film to keep such a balance between two diametrically opposed emotions without ever being too abrupt.

Sai Tamhankar as Shama Anand

It would be unlawful to disparage Sai Tamhankar's sincere portrayal of the submissive and submissive Shama. If anything, Sai gives the otherwise occasionally haphazard narrative the perfect amount of seriousness. Shama Anand is shown as Mimi’s bestfriend who supports her every up and down in her life. Also, she supported her in following her dream to become an actress and helped her in every aspect.

The film was shot in and around Rajasthan, and Mumbai with the majority of the filming taking place at the Rajasthan’s city popular places. The film's cinematography, by Akash Agarwal, is praised for its raw and intense visual style, which perfectly captures the mood of the film.Like the movie, the movie's making-of is quite remarkable.

Controversy 

Fans and critics have been praising the current Bollywood film "Mimi," starring Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi, for its plot and character development. The movie, which centres on a woman who serves as a surrogate mother for an American couple, has received praise for raising awareness of an unusual subject that is frequently vilified. In fact, it wouldn't have surprised if its second week earnings had surpassed those of the first, a remarkable feat last accomplished by Kangana Ranaut's Queen (2014). The movie could gross at least $50 million and more, depending on the competition it would have seen during its opening week and the following weeks. Overall Mimi collects 60 to 70 crores on Box office.
