The narrative of the renowned Chittorgarh queen Padmavati is told in a poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in the 16th century that served as the inspiration for the film.
In the movie, which is set in mediaeval India, Shahid Kapoor's Rajput ruler Ratan Singh falls in love with Deepika Padukone's stunning Padmavati after meeting her. Once they get married, he returns her to his kingdom of Chittorgarh. Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi, however, becomes enamoured of Padmavati after learning of her beauty. In an effort to seize Padmavati, he invades Chittorgarh, setting off a conflict between his forces and the Rajput army.
Amazon Prime Video purchased the digital streaming rights to Padmaavat in August 2017 for $200-250 million. In October, Paramount Pictures bought the theatrical distribution rights from Viacom 18 for foreign markets. The movie was created in 3D by Prime Focus Ltd. The movie's Indian theatre debut was originally set for December 1, 2017, but protests caused that date to be postponed.
After receiving U/A certification from the CBFC, the film was subsequently banned by the chief ministers of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana in an effort to uphold law and order and quell unrest in their respective states. The Indian Supreme Court overturned the prohibition, declaring that the right to free expression must be upheld and that the states must guarantee the film's uninterrupted showing. The movie was outlawed in Malaysia on January 30, 2018.
The Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) Colors, Colors HD, and Hindi movie channel Rishtey Cineplex all broadcast Padmaavat's television debut on September 30, 2018. With the same title, the movie was dubbed and released in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.
A visually magnificent historical drama, Padmaavat tells the story of the fabled queen Padmavati with a gripping story and strong performances from the key actors. With stunning photography, elaborate scenery, and detailed costumes, the movie is a visual delight that perfectly evokes the splendour of mediaeval India. Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor are excellent as the major performers, and Ranveer Singh gives a memorable performance as the cruel Sultan Alauddin Khilji. The historical drama Padmaavat manages to depict a moving tale of love, sacrifice, and honour despite the controversy that surrounded the movie's debut.

Deepika Padukone plays the role of the beautiful and wise queen Padmavati, who wins Maharawal Ratan Singh's affection. Despite being incredibly beautiful, Padmavati is not characterised by her appearance; her intelligence and bravery are also commendable. Her decision to commit Jauhar rather than being kidnapped by the enemy demonstrates how fiercely independent and self-respectful she is.
Shahid Kapoor's character, Maharawal Ratan Singh, is the courageous and gallant ruler of Chittorgarh who is totally dedicated to his queen Padmavati. He is shown as a righteous and noble ruler who is ready to give his life to protect his realm and his subjects.
The antagonist of the movie is Sultan Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), a despotic ruler who is fixated on Padmavati's beauty. Khilji is shown as a ruthless and clever leader who will stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. With his captivating performance, Ranveer Singh captures the allure and ferocity of Khilji.
Aditi Rao Hydari portrays Mehrunisa, Khilji's wife, as a sympathetic figure caught in the crossfire of her husband's cruel desires. Mehrunisa is described as a respectable and smart woman who is dissatisfied with her husband's behaviour but powerless to change it.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali had been planning a film adaptation of Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic Padmavat for a decade. The movie's pre production kicked off in July 2016. Shreya Ghoshal, a playback singer, tweeted in the same month about singing a song that Bhansali wrote for the movie.
According to several Rajput caste organisations, including Shri Rajput Karni Sena and its members, the movie Padmavati portrays the Rajput queen in a negative light. As a result, the group protested and later vandalised the film sets.
In October 2017, some individuals attacked and set fire to the set while it was being used to film a scene in Kolhapur's Masai Plateau at night. This resulted in the harming of several costumes and animals. Several Muslim leaders demanded a ban in response to the purported portrayal of Alauddin Khilji.
