Dhanteras Scriptures
As day 13 of the Kartik month, Dhanteras is the first day of the Hindu New Year. When the sun rises on the thirtieth day of the Hindu calendar, the day is also known as Udayvyapini Trayodashi. Dhanteras is only celebrated on a given day if the aforementioned conditions are met.
Donating lamps to Lord Yamraj on Dhanteras, during the Pradosh kaal, is thought to bring good fortune to you and your family. Dhanteras is observed on the day after sunrise of the following day if the Triyodashi Tithi continues into that day.
Importance of Dhanteras
Lord Dhanwantari, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, appeared, he had a pot full of nectar in his hands. Therefore, along with buying utensils, it has become a tradition to buy jewelery made of gold and silver on this day. It is believed that the date of Dhanteras has a special connection with the number 13, because anything bought on this day gives 13 times more results. It can also be said that the work started on this day brings 13 times success.
Further, it is widely believed in Hindu culture that Goddess Lakshmi enters only a clean house; consequently, on Dhanteras, people clean their homes in an effort to entice and welcome Goddess Lakshmi into their homes. They decorate the front door with lighted lamps, rangoli, and torans. Many devotees also light lamps at night and pray to Lord Yamraj for his favour.
Story of Lord Dhanvantri
Dhanvantri, the Hindu god of medicine and Ayurveda, is revered in ancient Hindu texts. People credit him with spreading Ayurvedic knowledge and curing illness throughout the world. Devotees pray to Lord Dhanvantri on Dhanteras for Ayurvedic healing of chronic diseases.
In addition, it is widely held that Lord Dhanvantri served as a doctor to the heavenly beings of Hindu mythology. Dhanvantri, according to Hindu mythology, was a reincarnation of Vishnu who emerged from the churned sea holding a book on Ayurveda and a pot of Amrit.
Story of Lord Yamraj
The story is about King Hima's son, who according to his horoscope would die from a snake bite on the fourth day after his wedding. His wife, however, was not deterred by this news, and she resolved to change her husband's fortunes. On the fourth day of their marriage, she kept her husband awake by telling him stories.
She piled up her valuables at the entrance to their bedroom and lit several diyas to trick the snake. Due to the glare of the diyas and metals, Yamaraj, the god of death, could not see a thing when he arrived disguised as a snake.
Lord Yamaraj supposedly spent the night and then left unnoticed the next day, sparing King Hima's son. Dhanteras is also known as Yamadepdaan, a day on which worshippers appease Lord Yamaraj by lighting earthen diyas in his honour and pray for the longevity of their loved ones.
Story of Goddess Lakshmi
Goddess Lakshmi has been connected to this Dhanteras tale. Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of good fortune, prosperity, happiness, and wealth, is said to have emerged from Samudra Manthan while seated on a lotus and carrying a vessel filled with gold. To honour Goddess Lakshmi and ask for her protection, devotees create elaborate rangoli patterns at the front door and place lit diyas inside.
In Hindu culture, daughters are often seen as manifestations of good fortune or the Goddess Lakshmi. Daughters and daughters-in-law leave 'kumkum' footprints at the front door of the house as part of Dhanteras and Lakshmi Pooja rituals in the hope that the family will be blessed with success and prosperity.
