They decorate the front door with lighted lamps, rangoli, and torans. Many devotees also light lamps at night and pray to Lord Yamraj for his favour. Story of Lord Dhanvantri Dhanvantri, the Hindu god of medicine and Ayurveda, is revered in ancient Hindu texts. People credit him with spreading Ayurvedic knowledge and curing illness throughout the world. Devotees pray to Lord Dhanvantri on Dhanteras for Ayurvedic healing of chronic diseases. In addition, it is widely held that Lord Dhanvantri served as a doctor to the heavenly beings of Hindu mythology. She piled up her valuables at the entrance to their bedroom and lit several diyas to trick the snake. Due to the glare of the diyas and metals, Yamaraj, the god of death, could not see a thing when he arrived disguised as a snake. To honour Goddess Lakshmi and ask for her protection, devotees create elaborate rangoli patterns at the front door and place lit diyas inside. In Hindu culture, daughters are often seen as manifestations of good fortune or the Goddess Lakshmi. So, let's spread the bliss of this auspicious occasion far and wide, brimming every heart with hope, peace and the divine rhythm of Navratri. When is Navratri in 2023? Navratri is a nine-day Hindu festival that people look forward to with great excitement. In 2023, this festival will be celebrated from October 15th to October 23rd. During these nine days, people come together to worship and honor the different forms of Goddess Durga. The festival is full of color, music, and dancing, making it a special time of joy and happiness for everyone. Why is Navratri celebrated? Navratri is all about the victory of good over evil. It's celebrated to honor the triumph of Goddess Durga, a divine female power, over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura. When the demon caused havoc and chaos, Goddess Durga fought him for nine long days and nights. On the tenth day, she finally defeated him. Navratri is a way of remembering this epic fight and celebrating the fact that goodness and truth always win over bad and false. But there's another reason too. Navratri falls during the change of seasons – from winter to summer and then summer to winter. During such times, our bodies might feel a little unwell. So, our ancestors suggested fasting during Navratri to keep our health in check. Navratri is also a time for people to come together, forget all their worries, and just celebrate with fun activities like dancing and singing. It is a joyful way for us to show our respect to the goddess and thank her for all the blessings she gives us. Dussehra, also known as Dasara or Vijayadashami is a Hindu festival that is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Rama's victory🏹 over the demon king, Ravana. The name Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Dasha' (ten) and 'Hara (defeat). The festival syombolizes the victory of good over evil. Dussehra marks the end of the nine-day Navratri festival and the tenth day of Durga Puja festival. It is seen by many as the start of preparations for Diwali, which takes place twenty days after Dussehra. The celebrations include Ram Lila, a theatrical performance by various artists depicting the story or his life. Later at night, Ravana's effigies, often along with those of Meghnada (Ravana's son) and Kumbhkarana (Ravana's brother), are packed with firecrackers and set ablaze in open fields.  How is Dussehra celebrated at home? During Dussehra, you take time off from your work to spend it with family, friends, and neighbors to come together in celebration. You don't have to attend a grand public gathering if you don't want to. With a bit of creativity and planning, you can celebrate this auspicious festival right at home.  Decorate your home with flowers, lights, and traditional Indian motifs to set the festive mood. Marigold flowers are usually used for the decorations. Make vibrant 'rangoli' designs at the entrance of your house. Be creative and use bright, colorful powders to make your designs pop. Start your day early with a Durga or Saraswati Puja🙏. This is generally done at a small altar or prayer room in the home where idols or pictures of gods are kept. You can recite traditional mantras, light incense, and pray for the well-being of you and your loved ones.  Although you're celebrating at home, that doesn't mean you have to do so alone. Invite family members or close friends virtually via video calls. Share stories, sing devotional songs, or even perform a little skit to narrate the tale of Lord Ram and Ravana, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. No Indian festival is complete without mouthwatering dishes. On Dussehra, it's a tradition to prepare and share a variety of sweet treats. You can make 'jalebi', 'rava kesari', or 'besan ladoo' at home. Savor these delightful dishes with your family, and don't forget to share with neighbors maintaining social distancing norms. Involve your kids in this celebration by engaging them in craft activities. Making bows, arrows, and effigies could give them a sense of the festival's essence and the significance of Lord Ram's victory over Ravana. You might as well send them Dussehra gifts as children would very much love them. Use this auspicious day to reflect on your own struggles with evil, whether literal or metaphorical, and how you've worked to overcome them. It's a good opportunity to teach children about the values of truth, bravery, and righteousness. When is Dussehra in 2023? This year, Dussehra will be observed on Tuesday, 24th October, 2023. Yes, on the same day when Durja Puja ends. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the 10th day of the month of Ashvina.

Govardhan Puja
75+ Loving Wishes for a Meaningful Govardhan Puja Celebration

The Hindu festival of Govardhan Puja celebrates the day on which Krishna vanquished the demon king Indra. It takes place four days into the five-day celebration that begins on Dhanteras and concludes on Bhai Dooj Tika. The Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, falls on the 15th of November, the same day as this year's Govardhan Puja. Govardhan Puja commemorates the day on which Lord Krishna, in an effort to save his fellow villagers from the wrath of Lord Indra, who had been furious with the villagers and therefore sent showers of rain over the village for seven consecutive days, lifted an entire mountain known as Govardhan parvat with his little finger. Lord Krishna had restored his popularity among the locals by coming to their aid. While fireworks, candy, the Lakshmi Puja, and the return of Lord Rama top most people's mental images of Diwali, there are other facets of the holiday that are often overlooked. One of the five days of Diwali celebrations is Govardhan Puja, but it is by far the least well-known of the festivals associated with the festival. Often associated with the term swayambhu, meaning self-manifested, this holiday is also known as 'Vishwakarman Day,' and it honours the eponymous God, who is revered as the divine architect and creator of our world. Legend has it that he built the Indraprastha palace for the Pandavas and made powerful weapons for the gods. It is widely believed that Krishna built the magnificent city of Dwarka, which he ruled over. As we gather to commemorate this joyous festival, we are reminded of the importance of gratitude, humility, and the eternal bond between humanity and nature. The Govardhan Puja wishes serve as heart touching expressions of love, blessings, and good wishes, exchanged between family, friends, and acquaintances. These wishes carry profound meaning, as they symbolize our acknowledgment of the divine grace and abundance that surrounds us. Why is Govardhan Puja celebrated? Devotees observe this joyous ritual, known as Govardhan Puja or Annakut Puja, with great reverence. Lord Krishna's hometown, Brijbhoomi, throws a huge festival in his honour every year. Lord Krishna and Radha's idols in the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan receive milk baths and are dressed in new clothes and ornaments. • Devotees begin the puja by building a hill out of cow dung and decorating it with colourful ribbons and flowers to represent Mount Govardhan. • Then, the devotees perform 'Parikrama' (moving around the mountain) around the cow dung hillocks, singing Kirtans (a mixture of music, dance, and devotional hymns). • They pray and perform aarti to the mountain known as Govardhan parvat so that their loved ones will be safe and happy. • Devotees gather at Lord Krishna temples all over the country to recite bhajans and Kirtans, and to worship the deities by presenting them with offerings of food, sweets, and flowers. Chappan Bhog' (56 different food items made up of delicacies, sweets, or savoury items) is traditionally prepared and offered to the Govardhan mountain as a token of reverence for Mother Nature. There are many other customs and ceremonies that accompany the Govardhan puja celebration. The Hindu population of India celebrates this religious holiday by praying to the gods Indra (the god of rain) and Vishwakarma (the god of construction) for the resources they need to make a home on Earth. Significance of Govardhan Pooja Govardhan Puja is a significant celebration because it reinforces the strong bond of faith, devotion, and protection that exists between Gods and devotees. The legend of Govardhan Puja should serve as a reminder to all of us to honour the natural world and to be grateful for the gifts we have received from Mother Nature. The only way to connect with divinity is through bhakti, or devotion, as depicted in the story of Lord Krishna moving the mountain and saving the lives of thousands of devotees. To protect the inhabitants of Gokul village from the elements, Lord Krishna carried them to the top of the massive mountain Govardhan. The faith of the devotees in their Lord and in the Lord's ability to protect them from harm under any circumstances gives Govardhan puja its significance.
