Plot 

Mithali Raj is former Test and ODI captain of women's national cricket team. She led India to finals of 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup. The film based on her life chronicles the events of her life's journey in the world of women cricket. It presents her struggles and euphoric rise in the women cricket.

The plot begins by introducing us to a young Mithali Raj, who defies societal norms and familial expectations to pursue her dream of playing cricket. Despite facing opposition and criticism, she remains determined and dedicated to the sport. The producer revealed the movie's release date as 4 February 2022 on 3 December, the same day Mithali Raj celebrated her birthday. The comedy movie Badhaai Do, starring Rajkummar Rao, had to be postponed till February 11 because of the conflicting date. The movie was later delayed, and it was ultimately released on July 15, 2022. On August 12, 2022, the movie began to broadcast digitally on Voot and Netflix in Hindi and dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions.

Reviews

Indian Today Anindita Mukherjee rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Shabaash Mithu is a film that will not reverse Bollywood's plight in the age of South dominance, but it will move you." Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the film three out of five stars and wrote, "As a tribute to a cricketer who changed the fortunes of women in India's most popular sport, it scores just enough runs to avoid being dismissed as an innings without substance." Sonil Dedhia of News 18 gave the film three out of five stars and wrote, "The film is sincere and meticulously crafted." It is a must-see for the story of a woman responsible for the phenomenal emergence of Indian Women's cricket over the past two decades. The Times of India's Rachana Dubey gave the film three out of five stars and wrote, "The film does not adequately depict the tense, nail-biting moments that would have occurred in her life, particularly during the 2017 world cup."

Shabaash Mithu made 0.40 crore on its first day in domestic theatres, 0.55 crore the next day, and 0.70 crore the following day. The movie made 2.52 crore (US$320,000) in India as of July 23, 2022, and 0.24 crore (US$30,000) abroad, for a total worldwide gross of 2.76 crore (US$350,000). After its theatrical run, the movie was labelled a box office failure.
