The story of Diya Aur Baati Hum revolves around Sandhya Rathi, a bright and ambitious young woman from a small town in Rajasthan, India. Sandhya dreams of becoming an IPS officer and serving her country. However, her conservative family and society have other expectations of her, and they are against her pursuing her career goals.

The production team built a replica of the famous Brahma Temple in Pushkar for the series, which became a key location in many of the episodes.
The lead actors, Deepika Singh and Anas Rashid, underwent extensive training to prepare for their roles as police officers. This included physical fitness training, as well as training in firearms, combat, and self-defense.
The series was known for its attention to detail, with many scenes featuring authentic Rajasthani costumes, jewelry, and cultural practices. The series was a major success for Star Plus, with high ratings and a large fan base both in India and abroad.
It earned a trp of 2.3 in week 11 of 2016 and a trp of 2.6 the following week when it was in seventh place. It had a trp of 2 in week 14, dropping to seventh place. However, it was discontinued by the channel in September 2016 due to declining ratings over the previous few months.
