Family

Robin's ethnicity is half Kodava. Roselyn, his mother, is a Malayali. His Kodava Hindu father, Venu Uthappa, used to be a hockey referee. Later, Uthappa turned to Christianity.

Career

In 2005, when India B played India A in the Challenger Trophy, Uthappa scored 66 runs for India B. This was the first time most people had noticed him. The next year, Uthappa made a match-winning 100 off 93 balls against the same team that got him into the major leagues.

Before, he played for India's Under-19 team, which won the Asia Cup. He used to be a wicket-keeper and batter. With a batting average of close to 40 and a strike rate of about 90, he is seen as something of an expert in limited-overs cricket.

In April 2006, Robin Uthappa made his One Day International debut in the seventh and final match of the English tour of India. He had a promising debut, scoring 86 runs as an opener before being run out. It was the best score in a limited-overs contest for an Indian debutant.

In January 2007, Robin was called back up to the ODI team for the series against the West Indies. In the first two games, he did not play. He scored 70 points quickly in the third game and 28 points in the fourth game.

Robin Uthappa hit 47 off 33 balls to lead India to a stunning victory in the sixth ODI of the NatWest Series 2007–2008, which kept Indian hopes alive in the seven-match series, in which they were down 2-3 before the match. He usually bats as the opener but entered this game in the unfamiliar position of number 7. India was five down for 234 after 40.2 overs when he arrived at the crease, requiring 83 from fewer than ten overs. Uthappa maintained composure to lead India to the target with two balls remaining in a surprising triumph after MS Dhoni was dismissed in the 47th over, with the Indian score at 294 runs.

Robin Uthappa IPL

In the 2008 Indian Premier League, he played for the Mumbai Indians, who had a pretty good first season. In his first game, he made 48 runs from 38 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Robin scored 43 runs from 36 balls in the following match against the Chennai Super Kings, including 6 fours and a six. He and Dwayne Bravo put up an unbroken 123-run partnership against the Kolkata Knight Riders, during which he hit a run-a-ball 37 to lead Mumbai to a smooth victory.

Robin Uthappa was traded with Zaheer Khan in January 2009 and transferred to Royal Challengers Bangalore. He scored the second-fastest fifty in the Indian Premier League in a game against Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) in 2010 by smashing a 51 (21), a key factor in the RCB's victory.

With an undefeated 68 off just 38 balls against the Chennai Super Kings, Robin delivered another game-winning performance. For this achievement, he was also given the Man of the Match award. He hit an unbroken 50 from just 22 deliveries against the Kolkata Knight Riders to lead the RCB to yet another easy victory.

At the end of the season, he had 374 runs in 14 games, which was a 31.16 average. He also hit 27 sixes, which was more than anyone else in that season. Uthappa was included in the Cricinfo IPL XI for his 2010 efforts.

Robin Uthappa was bought by the Pune Warriors for an impressive price of US$2.1 million (about INR 9.4 Crore) in time for the 2011 Indian Premier League. In that auction, he was the second-most expensive player behind Gautam Gambhir, who was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for US$2.4 million.

He was selected by the KKR in the seventh IPL season. In the first leg of the competition, which was held in the UAE, he did not perform well. After that, Robin was given the opportunity to open matches alongside Gautam Gambhir, and he did well in the India leg of the season. He won the Orange Cap for scoring 660 runs during the season, and in the process, he set a T20 record by scoring 40+ runs in eight straight games.

Robin Uthappa made 11 in the end, beating Matthew Hayden's record of most scores of 40+ in a single season. He was part of the KKR team until they released him before the IPL auction for 2020. The Rajasthan Royals spent US$380,000 (₹3 Crore) to get Robin for the 2020 IPL season.

He was traded to the Chennai Super Kings in January 2021. He helped the CSK advance to the ninth IPL finals with his 63 runs off 44 balls in Qualifier 1 against the Delhi Capitals. Robin was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2022 IPL Auction for ₹2 Crore before being released ahead of the Indian Premier League in 2023.
